Attractiveness of the teaching profession
Summary
The 2012–2017 term was marked by a policy of aggressive teacher recruitment, as well as a significant increase in teachers’ salaries. The past decade, however, has raised concerns about a crisis in teacher recruitment.
The CNESCO survey, conducted among third-year undergraduate students, suggests, however, that the teaching profession still attracts students.
Furthermore, a longitudinal analysis of recruitment policies does not support the conclusion of a general crisis in attractiveness, but rather points to sector-specific difficulties, which are severe in certain school districts (Créteil, Versailles, and Reims) and in certain disciplines (particularly modern literature, mathematics, and English).
The report highlights an increase in the number of public and private sector employees admitted to the competitive exam for elementary school teachers.
